Dark Frost (Mythos Academy #3) by Jennifer Estep

Dark Frost (Mythos Academy #3) by Jennifer Estep

This is a young adult paranormal fantasy novel (Rated PG-13)

♥♥♥♥
(Four Dark Hearts)

Book Summary

I've seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I'm supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I'm just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me--again.

Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects--and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I'm also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me? It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can't use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me--and I'm in for the fight of my life.

My Review

Well, just when Logan is about to admit his feelings all hell breaks loose. So, I was a bit miffed. I’m starting to feel like this romance is getting the better of me and I want to tell Gwen to move on. I’m hoping another guy shows up. However, the ending had promise.

This book was a little less predictable than the last two. Thank goodness. Yes, there is a fair amount that I did figure out, but one doozy that I hedged on someone else.

I did wonder why Kensie was noticeable absent. Is he her friend too?

I love that Gwen is fearless and not self-centered. And that’s what keeps me moving on. I picked up the next book right away.

Book Summary

I’m Gwen Frost, a second-year warrior-in-training at Mythos Academy, and I have no idea how I’m going to survive the rest of the semester. One day, I’m getting schooled in swordplay by the guy who broke my heart—the drop-dead gorgeous Logan who slays me every time. Then, an invisible archer in the Library of Antiquities decides to use me for target practice. And now, I find out that someone at the academy is really a Reaper bad guy who wants me dead. I’m afraid if I don’t learn how to live by the sword—with Logan’s help—I just might die by the sword...

My Review

So this is book two. And let me say I had expectations in the Logan department, not that this book is built on romance because it isn’t. Still I had hopes. Boy, did I have a lot of ups and downs with that one.

Characters – Gwen begins to train to become a better fighter. And we learn more about her powers.

I knew we would pick up the friends from the last book and saw the friends we would pick up rather early on this one. Again, I figured everything out rather early. But again, I wasn’t annoyed. I started to wonder if this is not by design. Because it was too easy to see what was going on. However, I’m not the target market. I just kept reading and watching to see exactly how it would play out and when Gwen herself would figure it out. I’d figured out the secret the minute she picked up the notebook.

I will say we get a fair amount of review in this series. However, if I’d read and waited months to get the next book, I would have been pleased with the reminders. However, I read back to back, so I was a bit annoyed. Again, I didn’t hold this against the author because this is my timing and not how important it is to jog the memory of someone who may have read the last installment months ago. I’ll only mention this once in a review because this is the authors style.

Still overall, I enjoyed and snagged up the next book right away.

Yes, Logan was swoon worthy in this book. But I choose a different guy for my book boyfriend for reasons you will know once you read.

Book Summary

My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy; a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest. But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why; especially since I should have been the one who died...

My Review

So, I’m been looking to read this one for a while. However with review books, it’s hard for me to read a book. For my fun books, I must listen. So when this one was finally released on audio, I snagged it up. Talk about page turner and I wouldn’t have expected anything less. This story captured me so, I read each in the series back to back gobbling them up.

World Building – What a unique world using mythology as a back drop. It is unique and nothing like anything I’ve ever read which is great. And I love that this author keeps things realistic when it comes to teenage activity. Sex is mentioned but not in a detailed way and more about the general populous than Gwen herself.

Characters – Well let me tell that Gwen is a kick butt female lead even if she can’t fight. Why? Because she never backs down from one and strives to do the right thing no matter what. And then there is Logan. Bad boy Logan comes on the scene and I expected fireworks. But this author gives us a dose of reality and keeps this story more Urban Fantasy than Paranormal Romance.

And so what, the romance is slowly slowly building. I can’t say what happens as it will be a spoiler. But I’m okay with that. Kind of like Hunger Games, this story doesn’t need romance brimming on the front lines to keep you interested.

Plot wise it was entertaining. I have to keep in mind that this wasn’t necessarily written for me as I figured it out early. And sometimes that bothers me, but here I was happy to go with the flow and enjoy the ride.

If you haven’t read this book and like YA paranormal fantasy, you should read. It’s a good one.

Audio Review

Tara Sands does a great job with this one. I felt she had the right snark to capture the character the way I would have in my own head had I been reading. Very enjoyable experience.

My Review

The last installment ended on a cliffy and I had to have this one. But I should have known I wouldn’t get the answers I sought.
This book was filled with more action and not a lot of words. At least not the kind I wanted to hear. I also think I was still fairly confused as to how I wanted the love triangle to go. Which is a good thing. If I like them both, I won’t be sad how things turn out. At least I hope not.
So action was the theme. This book had far less heat in it. I didn’t feel the tension where it should have been but I’m still intrigued enough to go further.
And yes, there was a killer cliffy. It was fairly predictable considering how the events went. So I wasn’t surprised. The author has done it again. I will be clamoring for the next installment.
My book boyfriend Jeremiah. (really neither, but I picked one.)

Soon circumstances send Leila back to the carnival circuit, where tragedy strikes. And when she finds herself in the crosshairs of a killer who may be closer than she realizes, Leila must decide who to trust– the fiery vampire who arouses her passions like no other or the tortured knight who longs to be more than a friend? With danger stalking her every step of the way, all it takes is one wrong move to damn her for eternity.

My Review

I was reluctant to read this one because the first book didn’t knock my socks off. But a recommendation from a reading friend and author suggested otherwise. I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed.
This book came alive. It wasn’t as predictable as it could have been. There were places where the author went left and I thought right. But it all worked out for the best.
I do have to say, I was bothered about the jewels lost in the fire. I mean, what happened to them, lol. It’s the little things.
So the characters were rich in color. I like that Vlad for the most part stayed true to his character and didn’t fade into some violet under a woman’s love. I also liked that Leila was strong and stuck to her decision. I hated how her not being a vampire was resolved, but it’s hard for me to go further without giving spoilers. So, I’ll keep that to myself.
Still overall the plot was rich with a lot of twist and turns. And I really enjoyed it.

Book Summary

Marie doesn’t need a complication like Horse. The massive, tattooed, badass biker who shows up at her brother’s house one afternoon doesn’t agree. He wants Marie on his bike and in his bed. Now.

But Marie just left her abusive jerk of an ex-husband and she’s not looking for a new man. Especially one like Horse—she doesn’t know his real name or where he lives, she’s ninety percent certain he’s a criminal and that the “business” he talks with her brother isn’t website design. She needs him out of her life, which would be a snap if he’d just stop giving her mind-blowing orgasms.

Horse is part of the Reapers Motorcycle Club, and when he wants something, he takes it. What he wants is Marie, but she’s not interested in becoming “property of”.

Then her brother steals from the club. Marie can save him by giving Horse what he wants—at home, in public, on his bike… If she’s a very, very good girl, she’ll get lots more of those orgasms only he can offer, and he’ll let her brother live.
Maybe.

A Romantica® contemporary erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave.

My Review
OH MY GOD! This book was well worth the price paid. I generally don’t pay that much for books, but this one was damn good.
First, I like to say, I liked the characters good and bad. They were real. No holds bar. I could hear the bikes rumbling down the path even though I wasn’t listening to this one. I got into the story and it didn’t let me go. I’m not a re-reader, but I’m tempted to read this one again. I liked it that much.
Second, I really liked how the author wove a story with leather of the past and silk of the present. It was gritty and raw and entertaining how it all unfolded.
Thirdly, Horse. OMG< OMG< OMG. This man had me at hello and I didn’t want to say goodbye. Damn! I also really liked Marie. She wasn’t a whinny girl. She did what she had to do and didn’t cry about it. Good for her.
Overall, this is a must read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My Review

First let’s start with the good stuff. Who wouldn’t love a book about a single mother finally getting her man and one who is so liked by the ladies? I also really enjoyed that this guy liked kids but it wasn’t like he didn’t like kids until he met hers. He was genuinely got along well with children. But I don’t want to give everything away. So I’ll stop there.
SPOILERS
What I didn’t like.
I didn’t like the sex aspect of the story. I can say that this author was a tease and left me with blue balls if I was a boy. But I’m not.
It really bugged me that she gave some details to the foreplay that led up to sex and then sex was concluded in one sentence with a few adjectives the first time and saying she woke up in the morning on the next time.
Personally, I don’t need a book with sex in it. But if you are going to go so far to say “cupping breast”, don’t treat me like a child and ignore the act itself. It’s not like I need gory details, but something would have been better than nothing, if you are leading with the phrase above.
It would have been better if all sex was left out totally and said something like ‘He turned my body to liquid fire’. And leave all details including foreplay out. That is a personal opinion. It left me frustrated as you can tell. The words leading up to the act suggest we are going to get a hell of a lot more than we got.
END OF RANT, lol
Overall though, I did like the romance (sans sex) a lot. I thought it was a solid story.
My book boyfriend is Luke.

My Review

So because I loved the first book I jumped into this one. And it wasn’t’ a bad read. I did enjoy it, just not as much as the last.
I found that the story line surrounding the couple a bit predictable. However, it was still sexy as all hell. I also thought a fair amount of time was spent building up future books.
On a good note, all the characters were involved in ways. I like that. I hate when character involved in a world drop off the face of the earth when the next book comes along. And don’t get me wrong. I never felt like it was Jacob’s book again. However, as an integral part in the world, it would be odd for him not be involved somehow. So great job there.
Audio Review
Xe Sands did a good job. However, in this one, I found that all the men sounded a lot like Jacob from the first book. Especially Gideon and Jacob. Because Jacob was in the book, I sometimes didn’t know who was doing the talking. And the females sound the same. The human sound like NYer's and the other females have a distinctive asian accent. You can not tell the difference without paying close attention to what is going on.
Overall, I enjoyed.

My Review

Talk about sexy demons, it was lust at first listen/read for me.
First let me say that the word demon in this book doesn’t mean what you and I think demons mean. These aren’t hell’s creations and you don’t need to go pray or confess your sins after reading this book, lol.
What we have here is one of the most unique world buildings I’ve seen in a while. And considering this book was written a few years back, that’s saying a lot. Demons are good and not bad, which for an author to pull off, that’s saying a lot as well.
This story had a good pace which kept me engaged. I was really into it. My only drawback was the story line built around sex. Yes, the tension was hot, but for me, that line of events is overused. However, again, this book was written several years back. And maybe when it was, that aspect of any story may have been more inventive. So I can’t hold anything against this book. And I won’t say more for spoilers.
Did I enjoy? Yes.  Will I continue the series? Yes. In fact, tomorrow’s review will be about book two.

Xe Sands did a great job. I admit at first hearing, I wasn’t impressed with the sound of her voice. But honestly, it really worked. She did a great job and making Jacob sound irresistible.

(Four Gritty Hearts)

Book Summary

Preston Mitchell, undercover DEA agent, has led a life of danger and obscurity. Knowing his job would never allow a normal relationship, he’s never opened himself up to any woman...that is until the lovely Avery Middleton stumbles into his life.

To the outsider, Avery has it all...wealth, family, connections and a great job. But on the inside, she’s miserable. Her social life is in the dumpster, the kooky gal next door has some zany plans for her and her selfish mother drives Avery to the point of insanity. Her only salvation is to get out of Charleston and start a new life. So that’s precisely what she does. She moves to Seattle and steps right into the path of hot and sexy, Preston.

Unfortunately for both of them, Avery ends up being in the wrong place at the wrong time and is now running for her life. But she’s not alone. She has a gorgeous DEA agent protecting her and suddenly finds herself irresistibly captivated by him. There’s only one problem. Preston carries more than his share of mental baggage, courtesy of his job. His covert missions have put him in places and situations he can barely stand to think about. Avery rocks Preston’s world because she is nothing like anyone he’s ever met and something extraordinary begins to happen between them. But can their love survive in this world, where danger, intrigue and deception lurk on every corner?

My Review
Talk about a gritty hero that makes you want to wrap him up in a big hug. That’s how I feel about Preston. He’s a guy with a past. And not because his parents messed him up, but rather his job has shown him the bad side of life.
It’s going to take a miracle for him to see his self worth. And why not through a snarky heroine by the name of Avery.
The one thing I love a lot about this author’s adult contemporary books is that she captures the southern charm in a way that’s endearing and makes you feel like you are there. Although this book isn’t set in the south, Avery is a southern. And you know what they say; you can take the girl out of the south but not the south out of the girl.
One other great thing about this book is the humor with comes in the form of a side character that cracked me up. She was funny but also lovable in the best friend kind of way.
Overall, I enjoyed it. Pick this one up.
My book boyfriend, Preston.

My Review
This series has come a long way from the first book I read and ranted about. It just goes to show if you see promise in a series not to give up after book one. This series just kept getting better and better. There was just so much goodness going on. And not just the luscious hot guys.
I really liked that Rayla was fighter even if she was ill prepared. She doesn't give up hope and didn’t back down. All great qualities for a kick butt female lead.
And the guys, all five of them each stole my heart along the journey. As much as I liked Heath, Zach has been my heart since book one. And I just really love him, lol.
But this series wraps up rather nicely and even leaves us room for growth in a spin off series. So we will see if the author takes that directions. YAY, okay… back to the review.
Sometimes it's not the light of the sun that will set the sky on fire, sometimes it's within you. Rayla is that girl and her task may seem hopeless, but she is determined to see it through.
If you haven’t read this series, it starts off with book one Five. Check it out.

My Review

This book isn’t overly long, so neither will my review. If you’ve read the first five installments or the compilation in book form, then you know the cliffy at the end had me picking this one up straight away.
I love drama in a book. And I’ve previously been a fan of love triangles. Not so much lately, but more so with YA. What I don’t like is the crossing certain lines. And I berated an author I love in YA for the direction her book took. Yet, her is a similar situation, and I don’t mind it so much.

Let me tell you why?
The biggest reason why messing around with siblings doesn’t bother me is because although the girl found herself in love with one brother, he made it clear that their relationship wasn’t a boyfriend/girlfriend type of one. No love.
So when his brother steps in the picture after the other brother broke her heart, I can see why in an unplanned moment things got out of hand. So there you have it. The biggest factor here is that there wasn’t a relationship with either of the brothers and she didn’t change sides in 60 secs out of the blue. Okay, I digress, I not going to get started on that book/series again.
END OF SPOILERS
Anyways, it still bothered me enough that I couldn’t give it five stars. It’s still taboo. But it read like five stars. I was holy into it.
My book boyfriend Lucas. (I couldn't get the scar, so ignore that. reminds me of a scene in the book).

Teaser ~

Boy oh boy, was Preston hot. Make that boiling. Scorching. Molten lava kind of hot. Messy dark brown, slightly wavy hair that was not long but not short either. And, oh what a mouth he had. His mouth made me want to jump on board and ride that train for life. His lips were the perfect kind of full and every so often, he’d run his tongue across them and I’d automatically squirm. His face was pure angular perfection...high cheekbones with those slight hollows beneath them, that were the perfect shape to accommodate my lips. But those eyes...my oh my. They were golden brown, like coffee with lots of cream. I could only imagine what they looked like right when he was...

Cheezits Ava, get your head out of the bedroom!

“Wouldn’t you agree Ava?” my brother was asking me.

I shook my head and swallowed. “I’m sorry, what did you say?”

“We were talking about the weather here in the summer and I was saying how much more pleasant it is than in Charleston?”

“Oh, yes it is.”Was my voice breathy sounding, or was it my imagination?

Preston was wearing jeans that rode low on his hips. They were tight and he had a superior set of buns. What would I pay to see those babies?

“Ava? What do you think?” someone asked.

“Buns!” I blurted out.

“Excuse me?”Caroline, my sister-in-law, asked.

Holy Toledo, did I just say buns out loud? What the hell Ava!!!

“Fun! Anything sounds fun!” I quickly said.

“Ava, you look a little flushed. Are you sure you’re feeling okay?”

“Hot! I mean no, I’m fine.” I looked across the room and my face totally flamed. Everyone was staring at me. I had unbuttoned my blouse and was fanning myself. I’d noticed that Preston had a gloriously hot tattoo of a sideways cross on his arm. I think I needed to go home.

“So Avery, where are you staying?” Caroline asked.

“Oh, I’m at the Four Sexy. Seasons! I mean the Four Seasons.”

Oh dear God, I need to get my act together here.

Deadly Sting (Elemental Assassin #8) by Jennifer Estep

Deadly Sting (Elemental Assassin #8) ~ Jennifer Estep

This is an adult urban fantasy novel (Rated R)

♥♥♥1/2
(Three Stinging Hearts)

Book Summay

Red is definitely my color. Good thing, because in my line of work, I end up wearing it a lot.

Most people shy away from blood, but for an assassin like me— Gin Blanco, aka the Spider—it’s just part of the job. Still, it would be nice to get a night off, especially when I’m attending the biggest gala event of the summer at Briartop, Ashland’s fanciest art museum. But it’s just not meant to be. For this exhibition of my late nemesis’s priceless possessions is not only the place to be seen, but the place to be robbed and taken hostage at gunpoint as well. No sooner did I get my champagne than a bunch of the unluckiest thieves ever burst into the museum and started looting the place.

Unlucky why? Because I brought along a couple of knives in addition to my killer dress. Add these to my Ice and Stone magic, and nothing makes me happier than showing the bad guys why red really is my color.

My Review
First off let me say that this isn’t a bad book. My rating is purely emotional and not totally based on writing and plot per se.
If you’ve read this series, I was really into Donovan. Then he was taken away. It took me until two book ago to really get over him. I just thought there was real passion in that relationship. Too bad…
Then Owen decided to make a move. He wasn’t the passionate guy Donovan was but I grew to like him. So then, last book Owen took a dick turn, I couldn’t believe it. How he acted was so out of character. Still, I’d grown to like him.
So of course I was hoping for resolution in this book….
Then there was the plot. Most of this book takes place in one day. Honestly, that’s tough to do and well. Only because honestly, every minute of one day typically isn’t all that exciting.
The other thing that bothered me was when the girl in the red dress died. It took Gin way too long to figure out why she was killed. I mean it was so obvious to me it annoyed me that Gin the ‘mighty spider’ wouldn’t see it.
Still, it was worth a read except at the end. And honestly, unlike Donavan, I’m ready for Gin to move on. There are other fish in the sea.
Audio Book
Lauren Fortgang is awesome. I mean she does the best reading for this book. If I’d dreamed up Gin’s voice and cadence, it would be this. I can only hope she continues.
My book boyfriend Finn.

Bite Me (A Love Story #3) by Christopher Moore

Bite Me (A Love Story #3) by Christopher Moore

This is an adult paranormal romance novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥
(Three Funny Bone Hearts)

Book Summary

The city of San Francisco is being stalked by a huge shaved vampyre cat named Chet, and only I, Abby Normal, emergency backup mistress of the Greater Bay Area night, and my manga-haired love monkey, Foo Dog, stand between the ravenous monster and a bloody massacre of the general public.

Whoa. And this is a love story? Yup. 'Cept there's no whining. See, while some lovers were born to run, Jody and Tommy were born to bite. Well, reborn, that is, now that they're vampires. Good thing theirs is an undying love, since their Goth Girl Friday, Abby Normal, imprisoned them in a bronze statue.

Abby wants to be a bloodsucking fiend, too, but right now she's really busy with other stuff, like breaking in a pair of red vinyl thigh-high Skankenstein(R) platform boots and wrangling her Ph.D.-candidate boyfriend, Steve (the love monkey). And then there's that vampire cat Chet, who's getting bigger and smarter--and thirstier--by the minute. Abby thought she and Steve could handle the kitty cat on their own, "mais non" . . .

Before you can say "OMG WTF?" Tommy and Jody are sprung from captivity, and join forces with Abby, Steve, the frozen-turkey-bowling Safeway crew, the Emperor of San Francisco and his trusty dogs Lazarus and Bummer, Abby's gay Goth friend Jared, and SF's finest Cavuto and Rivera to hunt big cat and save the city. And that's when the fun really begins..

My Review

First let’s start with the good. This book is laugh out loud funny. Maybe not as much as the first book, yet still it is funny. The silliness continues and makes this book a light read and pure entertainment.
Now, the bad. I wasn’t happy with the beginning, but I won’t say why (non- spoilery and all). I was even more upset with the end. This series is a LOVE STORY. And unfortunately, it doesn’t fill the name. I was quite surprised by the end despite the ending of the last book. I just assumed. But you know what they say about assume. It makes an ass out of u and me. Anyway….

I was even more disturbed by the pairings. Ugh.
Audio Review

Susan Bennett continued to carry this series. She’s an amazing narrator and actress. She pulled off voices keeping everyone with differences with ease.
Overall, even though the ending to the series sucked eggs, I still think it’s worth a read.

My book boyfriend is Tommy.
