Book Summary

Carter, Claire and Gavin have formed the perfect little family. Their friends are getting married and everyone is growing up, maturing and ready to face the future. Or are they?

From bachelorette party hell, porn addictions, dinner roll baseball and botched wedding proposals to finding out everyone's extended family is chock full of crazy, Carter and Claire begin to question the strength of the ties that bind them. Unfortunately, these ties have nothing to do with fuzzy handcuffs and everything to do with the mounting differences between them.

Will their friends make a mess of things with their inappropriate comments and need to know everything, or will they convince the couple that happily-ever-after sometimes really can start with beer pong?

My Review

The sad truth about this book is I don’t remember it well. I read nearly two months ago. Normally I can conjure up what this book was about and even with the notes I left myself, I can’t remember. It doesn’t say much towards this story other than it was un-memorable.

So, I go with my notes. I thought this book was cute and not as syrupy sweet as the last book. It’s still not as funny as people made it out to be. (I do have a strong memory of a bridal shower???)
It seems like those that found the first book really funny, didn’t find this one as funny. Or just the opposite which is in my case. I thought this book was slightly funnier as I found Claire a bit humorous in this one.
Anyway, Carter really won me over in this book. With all this said, I’m not really in a big hurry to move onto the next book although I’m slightly curious.
If audible has a $5 sale, I might be tempted to buy and listen to the next book. Otherwise, I don’t think I’ll read.
Audio Review
Romy Nordlinger as narrator was the same as the last book. She did an awesome female voice, but she didn’t really change her voice at all for the males which made it hard to know who was talking. And that’s true even if I was listening intently.

(Four Chase Hearts)

Book Summary

Choosing Chase - an Old Enough to Love You Novella

Just when Tess — widowed, pushing forty and carrying a few extra pounds — becomes resigned to her nonexistent sex life, her hunky young landlord makes his interest known. Tess would give anything to take Chase up on his offer for a one-night stand, but she’s afraid of ruining their friendship. She has a choice to make – one mind-blowing night with Chase or a lifetime of wondering ‘what if’.

Chase has wanted Tess for the last two years. Hell, he is head-over-heels in love with her, but he's almost a decade younger and she doesn’t take him seriously. Chase is livid when he assumes someone else has been fulfilling Tess’s needs. He wants her to see him as more than just a friend, even if it means playing down-and-dirty to prove it. But just how far will Chase go to win Tess’s heart forever?

He's a hunky yet misunderstood alpha male hero. She's a beautiful independent but gun-shy heroine. This book contains sexual situations, content and language and is intended for mature readers.

My Review

This was a super short read but worth it. If you are in the mood for a feel good story that will give you the promised HEA in a short time but in a believable way, check this out.
I have to warn you that there was a sense of predictability that ends up being handled differently than I expected which was a good thing.
Sometimes it’s nice to have some angst but not the emotional rollercoaster of other books. If you are looking for a nibble that gives hope to all cougars alive, lol, check out this book.

Epilogue (The Dark Duet #3) by C.J. Roberts

Epilogue  (The Dark Duet #3) by C.J. Roberts

This is an adult romance/erotica novel (Rated NC-17)

 ♥♥♥♥♥
(Five Sweet Hearts)

Book Summary

BOOK 3 OF THE DARK DUET
(The final version should have 15 Chapters + an epilogue)

I’m writing this because you begged. You know how I love the begging. In fact, you probably know too many things and know them far too well.

Who am I?

Well, that’s what I’m trying to figure out. I was a whore in my youth, a killer since my adolescence, and a monster as a man. I am the man who kidnapped Livvie. I am the man who held her in a dark room for weeks. But, most importantly, I am the man she loves.

She loves me. It’s quite sick, isn’t it?

Of course, there’s more to our story than can be surmised in a few short sentences, but I’m at a loss for justifying my behavior back then. I assume if you’re reading this, I don’t need to make those justifications. You’ve already made your own.

You’re reading this because you want to know about the rest of the story. You want to know what happened that warm summer night in September of 2010, the night I met Livvie at The Paseo. It was the night my life changed all over again.

It didn’t happen exactly as Livvie said. She’s been very kind to me in the retelling of our story. The truth is far more…complicated.

My Review

The way the last book ended, I couldn’t be sure that’s where the story really ended. There were too many unresolved feelings I had about this series that captivated me. Seduced me into loving a man most could call a monster.
I’m eternally grateful for the author for giving us a bit more. I feel so much more settled after this extended epilogue, namely abt.
We see inside the struggle this couple will endure to move forward if it’s possible with all things that happened. And we still get a poetic ending. However it’s one that doesn’t seem so unresolved as the last.
If you haven’t read this series, I highly recommend it. But with a cautionary warning. The subject matter is quite daunting and not for everyone. And don’t worry when  you fall in love in the dark.
Thank you again, I say to this author. I look forward to more of what you will write in the future.
My book boyfriend is Caleb.

Author Information

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn't do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life.  So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase.  Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodge ball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head.  Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what laptop out the window.  She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone, called her boss and quit her job.  Grinning, she made another call to her hubs and told him of her new adventure (after making sure his heart was beating properly again).

So began A. M. Hargrove's career as a YA/NA and Adult Romance writer. Her books include the following: Edge of Disaster, Shattered Edge and Kissing Fire (The Edge Series); The Guardians of Vesturon series (Survival, Resurrection, Determinant, reEmergent and Beginnings); Dark Waltz and Tragically Flawed.

Other than being in love with writing about being in love, she loves chocolate, ice cream and coffee and is positive they should be added as part of the USDA food groups.

Waterproof Excerpt 1
Ten more steps.

My legs ached with every jarring move, growing heavier the closer I got to my destination. The weight of my bounty pulled against me like a prisoner’s chain. If I dropped it, I would be safe. The idea taunted me as I ran through the abandoned junk yard, dodging large pieces of scrap metal and sliding over the rusty hoods of skeletal cars.

“Drop them or I’ll shoot you dead,” a gruff voice yelled behind me.

I didn’t dare turn back. Something whizzed past my ear and slammed into the side of an old van blocking the path in front of me. A reddish dust full of steel splinters exploded in my face as the unmistakable sound of tearing metal pierced the dusk air. I’d gravely misjudged this group of deserters.

Heart hammering in my chest, I slid to a stop before crashing into the bullet hole meant for my head. Two bottles slipped from my arms and rolled underneath the van before I could stop them. Shit. There wasn’t enough time but I couldn’t go back with only those left in my hands.

I braved a look behind at my pursuers. The three men tearing after me had nothing but revenge in their eyes. If the two sawed-off shotguns didn’t represent their intentions, then the man firing the military rifle at my head made it very clear.

Another bullet slammed into the van just as I ducked down to retrieve the bottles. Footsteps pounded against the broken pavement and dead leaves, sounding more like an army than a handful of survivors like me. I reached as far as my shoulder would allow, ignoring the pain searing through my tired muscles. My fingertips brushed the plastic container just before it rolled further under the van.

“Where’d he go?” one of the men called out. He sounded close.

Dropping to my stomach, I nestled the remaining bottles under my left arm, while trying to retrieve the others with my right. After squeezing half my body underneath the van, I finally grabbed the first, then the second. Another shot ricocheted off the ground in front of me. They were trying to flush out my position and if they found me now, I was dead.

Scooping up the prized possessions I’d risked my life for, I prepared to run. Trapped between two vehicles, only one option presented itself - I’d have to get to the old cargo containers. This particular group of deserters set up their camp inside a metal scrap yard. Smart and resourceful. The dilapidated containers had been pushed to the sides, creating a barrier and providing some semblance of safety. Although I’d slipped through them easily on my way in, my arms were now full of water bottles that slowed me down.

Water. Wars were fought and lost over it. People died. Billions of humans perished in the days leading up to the end. And now I risked my life for a mere eight liters because we’d used the last natural drop of clean water on the planet five years ago.

Metal cracked above my head. Dust fell into my eyes and tiny pellets showered over my back like a swarm of bees.

“I’ve got him!”

I looked up in fear, only to see that I still had a clear path to my escape. Shotgun man had his sights somewhere else. Now was my chance.

Sucking in a deep breath, I scrambled to my feet and ran as hard as I could toward the narrow crevice between the containers. Forcing myself not to turn and look where they were, I ignored the shouting and distinct sound of shells hitting the ground.

Five more steps.

Waterproof Excerpt 2

Vivienne yelled out and I whipped my head around to see what happened. The last man standing held an impressive hunting knife in his hand, while Vivienne had a fresh cut on her arm. Still, she held steady, sword gripped tightly in front of her, legs in a fighting stance.

Something stirred inside of me at the sight. Time slowed when I watched her wield the sword like an ancient warrior. It was hard to imagine that just a few years ago we were in high school worrying about football games and which party to go to on the weekend. Now we stayed in abandoned houses, scrounged for water, and spent most of our lives running. If things had been different, Vivienne and I would be graduating college this year. I had plans to go into medicine, and she wanted to be a vet. Funny how those dreams seemed so far away now.

A loud thump echoed through the now darkened night. She almost fell to the ground with the amount of momentum needed to decapitate the man. He dropped to his knees like a sinner begging for mercy, head rolling further down the hill. My stomach fluttered with admiration and annoyance.

“I didn’t need your help,” I said to her, getting up on my feet and trying not to wince at my injuries.

“Sure,” she huffed. Ripping her bandana off her face she tore it in two. “Here, wrap that up.” She nodded toward the tear in my sleeve and I stubbornly yanked the cloth out of her hand.

“I had everything under control,” I said between clenched teeth. It was the only way to mask the pain. “How did you know where to find me?”

“I followed the girly shrieks,” she said without missing a beat. I looked down at her in time to see a smirk pull at the corner of her mouth. “Let me do it.”

Once again, I allowed Vivienne to rescue me. It killed every part of that male ego inside, but I knew she’d let me do the same for her. In fact, I had. We always saved each other.

“Ow,” I said when she tightened the bandana a little too rough around my arm.

“Stop being a baby.”

“Stop showing off your man strength.”

She pulled even tighter but let a small laugh escape. I sucked in a breath at that sound, realizing how close I’d come to never hearing it again.

“Are you hurt anywhere else?” she asked, turning me around and patting her hands along my body. I froze, trying to ignore how comforting her touch felt. We’d been friends for years, and she was the only person in this world I trusted. Why had I risked so much for this run?

I stepped away from her, not liking where my thoughts were headed. “I’m fine,” I mumbled. “Stop mothering me.”

“I wouldn’t have to if you’d listen to me.” She stopped in front of my face and stared me down. I stood a little over six feet tall and she was just a few inches shorter. Together with that glare, almost any man would cower under her. “Was it worth it?”

“Huh?”

“The water. How much did you get?”

I hung my head in embarrassment. “I had eight, but they shot through one. So six, I guess.”

“Six bottles?” She looked impressed.

“No, six liters.” Silence.

“You just made me kill three men for six liters of water?”

I shuffled my feet. “You only killed two.”

She reached out so quickly, I couldn’t defend myself. Both hands pushed against my chest and I stumbled back, falling to the ground.

“I could make it three,” she hissed. “I should kill you for your stupidity alone.”

Excerpt

He took a step away from her and bumped into the chair he was just sitting in. He sank down onto the seat.  “You got five minutes to think of more rules. After that, you’re mine.”
Her toes curled. She was ready to be his, all night long and again in the morning.
“First things first. You can’t tell me I have five minutes because I get to be in charge for the first two weeks.”

“Shit,” Preston mumbled under his breath.
“Rule number…whatever number we’re on now, no cursing. You know I hate that.”
“Okay, I promise not to curse when we’re together.” He waved his hand trying to speed her up.
“Great, next rule is…” Elizabeth ran her hands through her hair and glanced around the room looking for inspiration. “The next rule is…” She stared at the salad and dressing on the table. They probably wouldn’t be eating that tonight. “I need to put this in the refrigerator.”
“Elizabeth Abigail Kemp.” Preston leaned his head back against the chair and closed his eyes. She could hear the frustration in his voice. Her gaze travelled down the length of his body and landed on the erection straining against his pants.
“Oh my,” she whispered before turning and grabbing the salad bowl and taking it to the refrigerator. She was unable to see Preston with the refrigerator open. Instead of closing it after she was done, she leaned in further, relishing the feel of the cold air on her heated skin.
“Elizabeth, if I’m not inside you within the next few seconds I’m going to explode.”
Her knees buckled. She gripped the refrigerator tighter for balance. She heard a chair scrape against the kitchen floor. A second later she felt his erection against her ass. She stood up straight and nearly came undone, her movement pushing her closer against his hardness.
“Your two weeks have just begun.” His breathing was irregular. “Where do you want me? The bedroom or the couch?” he asked.
She closed the door. Turning around, she pressed her back against the refrigerator. These two weeks were hers. She refused to let him dominate during her time no matter how delicious he looked standing in front of her.
“Take your clothes off.”

After inheriting a large tract of land and house from a close relative, she has relocated to an opulent area in Connecticut hoping to start her life anew, and leave her clingy ex-husband behind. Stubborn, opinionated, and impatient, she has no interest in selling her land to the money hungry vultures that have started sniffing around. She also has no interest in falling in love or being pursued by a certain attractive yet arrogant alpha male interested in her property.

Tucker, however, has other plans. Realizing that Lilliana is sitting on a real estate goldmine, he sets his sight on trying to obtain it at any cost. Even if it means deceiving her and buying his way into her heart. But Lilliana can't be bought and Tucker gets more than he bargained for when she rebuffs his financial and sexual advances at every turn.

Their chemistry and physical attraction to one another is undeniable and Lilliana has a way of bringing out the best in the usually cold and austere Tucker. “Do you like horses? You seem at ease with them.” Tucker asked.

“Yes, I grew up around them. How about you?”

“Yes, me, too. Before my parent’s lost their farm, we had several worker horses. I loved riding them when I was young,” he stated pensively as if thinking back.

“It’s hard to believe that Tucker McGrath real estate mogul and playboy extraordinaire is one and the same to the Tucker McGrath who grew up helping his father on a farm,” Lilliana declared as she walked around and poked Tucker in the ribs.

“Is it really that hard to believe?”

Batting her eyelashes animatedly, she quipped, “Maybe to the untrained eye, but being as I’m a dim-witted, red-neck, I can sniff out my own kind.”

“I never suggested you were dim-witted. The red-neck part, yes, but never dim-witted,” he joked, tugging her cropped hair. “And are you suggesting I’m dim-witted?”

“I never suggest,” Lilliana grinned.

“You don’t know when to stop talking, do you?” he sighed.

“Why don’t you make me?”

Lilliana was hoping Tucker would shut her up the way he had twice before, with his tongue firmly planted in her mouth. One of Tucker’s eyebrows went up and the corners of his lips curled upwards, but he remained immobile.

“How about a ride?”

“Excuse me?” Lilliana asked, her mind spinning in all kinds of salacious directions.

“Horseback, Lilly. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. You’re not even sure you like me, remember?” Tucker asked sarcastically, obviously reading Lilliana’s thoughts.  “I’m haughty, arrogant, and…”

“Dim-witted,” Lilliana added.

Tucker simply nodded and smiled at her, but the gleam in Tucker’s eyes made Lilliana  wonder if he was somehow keeping a tally of all the times she was being unruly.

“Do you need a lift?”

“No, I’ve got this,” Lilliana confidently responded.

Without delay, she gripped the reins of the saddle, put her foot in the stirrup and pulled herself onto the back of the mare in one fluid motion.  Lilliana was proud of her own poise considering she hadn’t ridden in over ten years.  She looked over to Tucker, hopeful he was impressed with gracefulness as well. His slack-jaw and wide, lusty eyes gave away his awe of her and Lilliana smiled conceitedly.

“Do you need a lift?” she asked Tucker.

He chuckled and shook his head. “No, I’ve got this, too.”

Tucker moved with such agility and velocity, Lilliana had to focus on not drooling a puddle of saliva onto the poor beast’s back. His biceps bulged through his shirt when he pulled himself up and swung his leg over the horse. Lilliana had expected Tucker to saddle another horse, but instead he was now sitting directly behind her, so close their bodies melded into one.  He took the reins from her hands and gently tugged on them, making the stallion whinny and jerk its head back.

“Whoa, there, girl,” he cooed soothingly.

Tucker’s authoritative voice, the feel of his solid body pressed against her and the control he radiated was so intense, Lilliana feared she would burst into flames from internal combustion.

“Are you ready, pet?” Tucker asked, his lips right next to her ear.

Before she could answer, Tucker yanked on the leather straps and they were moving in a slow trot, their bodies bouncing in unison. Lilliana panted as the horse’s trot broke out into a brisk jog.  Tucker circled the horse around the stable and then out into a small open field.

With every click of Tucker’s tongue as he guided the stallion and tugged on the reins, Lilliana became wetter and more excited. She wondered if Tucker had any idea how damned tempting he was at that moment.

“How does it feel to have so much power between your legs, Lilly, and to be sitting atop a creature that has so much strength?”

Every word spoken from Tucker’s mouth was deliberately suggestive and sexual, and Lilliana found it utterly exasperating.

“It feels like home.”

About the author:

I'm a full-time mom, wifey, healthcare worker, and wanna be switch. I was born and raised in a sexually repressed, strict Christian household in the bible belt of the USA. This upbringing and repression contributed to my wicked imagination and writing has been my only outlet for my sexual fantasies. Finally at the ripe and sexually primed age of 40, I mustered up enough courage to share my naughty thoughts and put pen to paper. I sincerely hope to find my niche in writing erotica in all forms, be it romance or paranormal.

My Review

Because I read a lot, I’m not easily impressed. With all the praise I was determined to read the book. In fact I purchased it on Kindle to read because at the time it wasn’t on audio and I’d heard such great things.
So one day when I was feeling blue and needed a laugh, I started reading. Let me just say I didn’t find all the preggios jokes funny. So I put it down. Then audible had a sale and I bought feeling like giving the book a second chance. Maybe because I’ve read and seen characters such as this one, but I still didn’t find it that funny the second time around. But furthermore the time of the jokes didn’t make sense. Let me explain.
SPOILERS
Claire is in college. She doesn’t have siblings. She’s talking about not wanting to have kids and expressing it in terms that someone who has been pregnant or has had a close relationship with someone pregnant would know. What would a college student know about the deets of giving birth if she’d not interested and didn’t know anyone who had? Her claim is she saw a video of giving birth in sixth grade where they showed the baby coming out of the vayjayjay. I don’t think so. Never would have happened now or in the past. High school maybe, but still doubtful. Because she references the night with a girl wearing Louboutins, she means now. And no way would a school show a preteen fresh out of elementary a graphic video of giving birth.
The jokes didn’t work for me. Plus the humor was forced and exaggerated. The punch lines weren’t new or freshly told.
More into the story, the girl has a one night stand. She’s looking to lose her virginity. That just doesn’t ring true to me, but I didn’t take hearts off for that. She halfway sold me on the possibility. My problem was when she got pregnant. She agonizes over finding this guy to tell him he’s a father. When she runs into him again years later, she leaves the bar where she sees him without getting his name or enlisting her friend to do so. I get that she was shocked and it would be hard. But for all she knew, he was there one night and she might not have ever seen him again to tell him a truth he deserved to know. I mean she had that one night with him and couldn’t find him for five years. Yet, she didn’t even bother to find out how long he would be in town before she high tailed it out of there??? This from a girl who wanted desperately to track him down and do the right thing. Doesn’t play for me.
So on a stroke of luck, the guy ends up working for her friend’s boyfriend/husband, I forgot and she runs into him again. Thank goodness for that. And a little too convenient. But she waits a hell of a long time to tell him to the point I was almost ready to DNF the book.
END OF SPOILERS
Again, the humor was weak. The few times I laughed out loud was when it was from Carter’s POV.
As I purchased this book and the next on sale at audible, I did continue to the next book. L
Audio Review
Romy Nodlinger was a good narrator. The only problem is she used more inflection rather than tone to change the voices and wasn’t very successful. While her acting skills are good, I found it hard to follow when a POV changed (from male to female or visa versa)  because I wasn’t sure who the narrator of it was. The author didn’t have headings with the name of the POV or the producer didn’t include them. But I found myself lost with a new chapter wondering who was speaking every time until they said or did something that let me know whose POV it was. Very frustrating.
My book boyfriend and the one who saved the story for me, Carter.
